This is the suggestive conclusion which apparently can be reached after having read the contents of pages nn. 483 and 484, first volume, of the monumental work “Italy from 1380 to 1600” (Laterza – 1991), which states that “(…) Carlo, Giovan Battista and Cosimo Martelli (…) sold insurance policies for ships “…….. in the year 1583! Leaving aside the references linked to a romantic past, the insurance vocation of the Martelli family was confirmed in the twentieth century starting with the grandfather Angelo (who was General Representative for Italy of the Union, French Company) in whose marriage certificate dated May 1919 the profession item is that of insurer, until, without interruption, to the current Martelli Porsenna & Patrone Srl, founded in 1952.
